Endometriosis is a condition which may be extremely painful or have no symptoms at all.
Around 40% of women have no symptoms of endometriosis and only receive that diagnosis when they start having tests for infertility.
It’s a common disease affecting 10% of women of reproductive age – that’s 5 million women in the United States and around 176 million worldwide.
What Is Endometriosis
The endometrium is a mucous membrane that lines the inside of the uterus (womb).
In women who have endometriosis, cells that behave like the ones in the endometrium are found elsewhere in the body, most commonly in the pelvic cavity.
Each month these cells react to the menstrual cycle just like those in the endometrium. They build up, then break down and bleed.
However, unlike the cells lining the womb that leave the body as a period, this blood has no way to escape. The internal pressure caused by the building up of the cells and the internal bleeding is what can give rise to extreme pain.
Did you Know...
• Endometriosis affects the immune system but it’s not an autoimmune disease.
• A woman may have severe endometriosis and no symptoms or mild endometriosis and extreme pain and lots of symptoms. It is unusual in that the severity of the condition does not dictate the amount of pain or number of symptoms.
• March is the month for Endometriosis Awareness.
Endometriosis can cause cysts. If endometrial tissue grows in your ovaries it can cause a cyst which is often full of dark, reddish brown blood.
These cysts can range enormously in size – from 0.75 inches to 8 inches.
An endometrioma cyst may also be called an endometrial cyst, or sometimes it is called a chocolate cyst (because it is dark, full of blood)
Mythbusting – True or False?
1. Pregnancy is a cure for endometriosis.
Pregnancy is not a cure for endometriosis. Being pregnant may provide temporary relief from symptoms but it does not cure the condition.
2. You have endometriosis because you did not have child / children in your early twenties.
Delaying pregnancy is not a cause of endometriosis.
3. Hysterectomy is the definitive cure for endometriosis.
Hysterectomy is not a definitive cure for endometriosis. So if someone tells you that, get a second opinion.
4. Endometriosis always makes you infertile.
It can do but that isn’t always the case. 30 – 40% of women may become infertile but 60 - 70% fall pregnant on their own or with some reproductive help.
Endometriosis is difficult to diagnose.
The only way to know for sure is by having a laparoscopy performed by a specialist.
Because it is so hard to diagnose (and also because of a general lack of knowledge about the condition) there is often a very long delay between a woman telling a doctor about her symptoms and actually being diagnosed.
The average is an astounding 8.5 years but it can take up to 12.
If you have endometriosis symptoms, you can speed up the diagnosis time by seeing a specialist first.
Endometriosis and Infertility
Surgery can help women who want to become pregnant naturally but surgery on your ovaries may compromise their function which ironically, may make it harder to become pregnant.
If you are considering surgery for endometriosis and you want to start a family, make sure that you talk to your doctor about fertility.
The concern of Chinese Medicine for any surgery is the potential to compromise the flow of energy in your body which may lead to further complications and potential chronic illness.
Endometriosis may require surgery, but with special herbal formulas, dietary and lifestyle adjustments you may be able to avoid surgery.
• Painful periods
• Internal bleeding
• Chronic pelvic pain
• Painful ovulation
• Abnormal bleeding
• Pain during or after sex
• Suppressed immunity leading to chronic illness
Causes of Endometriosis
Western Medicine Causes
According to Western medicine, the cause of endometriosis is still unknown but it’s thought that genetics could be to blame. If your mother or sister has endometriosis, then you are more likely to have it too.
Eastern Medicine Causes
Chinese medicine has recognized and treated endometriosis for thousands of years - far longer than Western medicine.
Endometriosis causes bleeding in areas of the body where normal blood flow does not usually happen. The blood is trapped and Chinese medicine calls this static Blood or Blood Stagnation.
Any form of stagnation means that the flow of Qi energy is blocked.
Women with endometriosis often have a menstrual flow of blood which is reddish brown or brown with clots. This is also replicated in other areas of the body that have endometrial tissue.
This triggers an inappropriate response from your immune system which sees that there is old blood in the wrong place. It views it as toxic and reacts by sending out chemicals to get rid of it.
If that doesn’t work, the immune system then tries reacting to all endometrial tissue which unfortunately includes the lining of your womb. If your immune system turns on your womb, it then becomes an unsuitable place for an egg to implant. At this stage, you become infertile.
When a chronic disease infiltrates the body’s network of vessels, Chinese medicine recommends the use of herb resins which are able to reach deeply into the body.
The recommended resinous herbs are Frankincense and Myrrh which are both included in our Free Flow formula.
There are three main Western treatments for endometriosis:
Excision via laparoscopy is the best surgical treatment but it should only be performed by a surgeon who has a lot of experience in the technique and who has a good understanding of endometriosis.
Endometriosis needs oestrogen to grow, so hormones that slow down or completely stop the production of oestrogen are commonly used as a treatment. These hormonal treatments include
• the oral contraceptive pill
• Mirena IUD
For women with endometriosis, pain can become part of everyday life. But did you know that taking over-the-counter or prescription analgesics too often can actually make your pain worse?
Addiction is also an issue. You may find that you need to take increasingly large doses just to make you feel normal. If pain is a major issue, look for a Pain Clinic or a Pain Psychologist for help.
According to Chinese medicine,
Acupuncture can be very effective in reducing pain, with no side effects.
Chinese medicine is able to improve the blood flow and clear away the sediment of old blood. Then your body can stop creating immunological protective mechanisms.
This allows your body to repair and relax so that conception can take place.
Steps to Success
For thousands of years, Chinese medicine has known that endometriosis affects every woman differently. That means that there’s no one treatment that will work for everyone.
This approach means that Chinese medicine has a high rate of success in treating endometriosis.
DO THE RIGHT EXERCISES
Exercise is often difficult for people suffering from chronic pain but endometriosis gets worse when you don’t keep moving.
If you have chronic pelvic pain, your pelvic floor could be overactive rather than weak. This means that exercises such as Pilates and Planking or working with a Personal Trainer (who is not knowledgeable about endometriosis) may not be right for you.
