Anti-Viral Combination is a modern formula that was devised to treat a variety of infections. It is comprised of extracts of three herbs: Lonicera (shuanghua, often called jin yin hua), Scute (huang qin), and Forsythia (lian qiao). The herbs Lonicera and Forsythia are the two key ingredients in Fight the Flu!that help boost the anti-viral power of Anti-Viral Combination.

The joining of Forsythia and Lonicera in a formulation represents a long tradition of Chinese herbs prescribed for the treatment of infections. The addition of Scute in this small formula represents one of the newer developments of Chinese medicine,based on research involving its main active constituent, the flavonoid baicalin. Typically, in the ancient style formulas, Lonicera and Forsythia would be combined with various wind dispelling, surface relieving herbs, as is done in the well-known Radiant Wonder formula called Stop It Cold!, in this case, they are combined with the heat clearing herb Scute.

Honeysuckle flower (Lonicera flower): ). Lonicera is considered a very reliable antibiotic herb, used effectively for thousands of years against fevers, colds, flus. It has also been useful for sore throat and conjunctivitis, as well as inflammations of the intestines, urinary tract and reproductive organs. Lonicera has a strong antimicrobial effect against many pathogenic bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae. There is research to support that Lonicera may be effective in the treatment of certain cancers, especially of the breast. And it has been shown to be effective against the influenza virus, as it also has antimicrobial effects. In laboratory studies Lonicera has shown to dramatically reduce cholesterol.

Forsythia fruit: Forsythia flowers helps to clear heat and toxins from the body. It is also useful in formulas to dissipating nodules and lumps in the neck. Forsythia fruit has been used in Chinese herbalism for over 4,000 years and is considered to be one of the 50 fundamental herbs. A bitter tasting pungent herb, it has an antiseptic effect. The fruit is a bitter astringent herb that stimulates the heart, nervous system and gall bladder. It contains vitamin P, which is used to strengthen capillaries. The fruit is also antidote, antiphlogistic, antitussive, diuretic, emmenagogue, febrifuge, laxative and tonic. It is used internally in the treatment of acute infectious diseases such as mumps, and also for tonsillitis, urinary tract infections allergic rashes etc. The fruit is harvested when fully ripe and is dried for use in herbal formulas. The plant has a similar action to Lonicera japonica and is usually used in combination with that species to achieve a stronger action. The flowers have a broad-spectrum antibacterial action, inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella dysenteriae, haemolytic streptococcus, Pneumococcus, Bacillus typhi, Mycobacterium tuberculi, etc.

Scutellaria root: In 1973, 92 wooden tablets were discovered in a 2nd-century AD tomb in northwestern China. Among the herbs listed in prescriptions for various ailments for Scutellaria root. The herb has had a central place in Chinese Herbal Medicine since at least 2,000 years and is one of the main herbs for "hot and damp" conditions, such as dysentery and diarrhea. About 12% of Scutellaria are the flavinoids baicalin and wogoniside. It also contains sterols and benzoic acid. The key actions for "Scut" make it a very useful herb in formulas that produce sedative, antiallergenic, antibiotic and anti-inflammatory effects. Extensive scientific research has shown that Scutellaria produces a clearly marked anti-inflammatory and antiallergenic action. This is due largely to the flavinoids. It also is used to help with venous problems and fragile capillaries. Clinical trails suggest that the use of Scutellaria for high fevers and infections is justified. The herb may also be useful for problems arising from diabetes, including cataracts.

Isatis root: is famous in Chinese Herbalism as a broad spectrum antibiotic agent affective against many kinds of infections and inflammations. Traditionally both the roots and the leaves are used. Its energy is bitter, salty and very cold. The active constituents are indoxyl-glucoside, sitosterol, isatin, argine, glutamine, proline, and tyrosine. This herb is also used in Ayurvedic medicine (called nila).Modern laboratory research in China has shown that Isatis is effective against infections caused by various types of pathogenic bacteria, both gram-negative and gram-positive. It has been highly effective at combating dysentery, skin infections, bacterial pneumonia, strep throat, tuberculosis, hepatitis, jaundice, acute laryngitis, lymphoadnitis, encephalitis, mumps, sudden high fevers, swellings that are inflamed, dry throat, scabies, thirst from heat and heat rash, ear infections, urinary tract infections, skin eruptions. Isatis has also shown an antimicrobial effect, an antiparasitic effect, and an anti-viral effect. There is copious research on Isatis, and in many cases the results have been dramatic.

Isatis leaf: Derived from the leaves of the Isatis plant, which is a source of indigo dye. This botanical has been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic medicine. It is used in combination with the root part of the same plant and other herbs to treat common cold, sore throat, mumps, respiratory aliments, other febrile diseases and malignant tumors. It is also used in Danggui Longhui Wan, a formula used to treat chronic myelocytic leukemia (CML) in China. Studies indicate that Isatis has antimicrobial, antiviral and immunostimulatory properties.

Terminalia fruit: Terminalia stops coughing and improves the condition of the throat. It is often used for chronic cough, wheezing and loss of voice.
