Ingredients:   Pueraria root, Coix seed, Platycodon, Magnolia flower, White Peony root, Cinnamon Bark, Gypsum, Jujube fruit, Rhubarb root, Cnidium, Ginseng root, Licorice root

Ingredients in Detail:

Pueraria root: Pueraria is a very effective herb for releasing tension, heat and congestion in the muscles, especially in the upper back. Pueraria, or Kudzu, contains isoflavinoids, puerarin, daidzein, and plant sterols. Daidzein is estrogenic. Pueraria has been used for thousands of years as a remedy for muscular pain. The herbal authority known as the "Sage of Medicine", Zhang Zhongjing (AD 150-219 AD), recommended Pueraria if the patient "has a stiff back and muscles, goes not breathe easily, and is susceptible to gas." Chinese studies indicate the Pueraria increases cerebral blood flow in patients with arteriosclerosis, and eases neck pain and stiffness.

Coix seed: Coix seed, also known as Job's Tears, in a general health tonic, primarily benefiting the skin, lungs, and spleen. It improves the flow of water throughout the body, which assists in eliminating water stagnancy, abdominal bloating and excessive water weight. Coix seed is also used in the Orient for arthritis and rheumatism, since these health conditions are associated with excess body moisture. Coix is also considered to be very nourishing to the skin and is said to make the skin soft and smooth. It is also believed that Coix helps in reducing moles and to eliminate warts and blemishes. Scientific research has also shown that Coix contains an anti-tumor agent that may be helpful in the treatment of cancer, and in particular skin cancer. It has also been shown to have anti-viral activity.

Platycodon: Platycodon opens up and disseminates lung energy and expels phlegm. It is used in Medicinal Herb Formulas for cold and coughs. It is very helpful in directing other herbs to the upper regions of the body. It has been shown to lower blood glucose levels and aid in the metabolism of cholesterol.

Magnolia flower: Magnolia flower expels wind-cold and unblocks the nasal passages. It is very useful in clearing nasal obstruction and congestion, nasal discharge, loss of sense of smell, sinus problems, or related headache.

White Peony root: is well known for its ability to relax muscles and nourish the blood. Peony is said to relieve spasms and cramps anywhere in the body. It does this by promoting the production of more blood and by helping the body to retain vital fluids that lubricate muscles, tendons and bones. It is can eliminate many body pains. White Peony is also an important herb to help normalize the liver function, which controls the blood flow during the menstrual cycle. It is well known for its ability to help regulate the female hormonal cycle. Chinese Herbalism sees a connection between a feeling of tightness in the body, often in the abdomen with a lifestyle that is challenging. White Peony is the perfect herb to help the body relax this tension.

Cinnamon Bark: Cinnamon Bark is a warming herb and is a strong energy tonic that affects the kidneys, heart and liver. Cinnamon Bark promotes good circulation, helping to disperse energy blocks in the neck and shoulders, relieving tension in this area. Regular use of Cinnamon Bark promotes a more youthful and rosy-cheeked complexion, clear of skin blemishes. Cinnamon bark is used in energy formulas and blood tonics to build energy and blood. When combined with certain other herbs, it helps direct warming energy to the Kidney System, firing up sexual energy.

Gypsum: Gypsum, or Calcium Sulfate, clears heat from the lungs and drains fire from the stomach. It is used in cases of high fever without chills. Gypsum moderates the effects of heat and dryness that Ma Huang produces. Ma Huang and Gypsum work together to treat coughing and sinus problems.

Jujube fruit: We use Jujube fruit in many formulas. It is often used in conjunction with Ginseng. It seems to enhance to effects of Ginseng, while smoothing out the rough edges of Ginseng. It is a harmonizing herb that makes the whole formula work together. It provides high quality energy. It is also a blood builder and has a calming effect.

Rhubarb root: Rhubarb is considered a purgative, cathartic and laxative herb. All herbs that induce evacuation of the bowels fall into this category. However, Rhubarb is unique. It is a mild herb that has an affinity for the large intestine. It has three basic effects: it facilitates bowel movements in order to eliminate stagnant food; it clear heats from the system; and, it expels excess liquids. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine when the digestive system becomes sluggish (maybe from eating too fast all the time, or eating foods which are difficult to digest, or because of too much emotional stress), it creates a condition in the intestines called “damp heat,” causing constipation and/or hemorrhoids. Rhubarb drains damp heat, and it also both invigorates blood and dispels blood stagnation. This is critical for good intestinal health, because proper blood circulation allows for both better moisture in the intestines and for better nutrient assimilation. Traditionally, Rhubarb is combined with other blood building and moistening herbs to build a formula which is safe and gentle to help rebuild the health of the digestive system for chronic constipation. Check out the following description of Rhubarb….. For centuries the rhizome(root) of the rhubarb was highly regarded by the Chinese for its medicinal properties. Modern research has justified its reputation. It contains anthraquinones, which have a purgative effect, and tannins and bitters which have the opposite effect. If taken in small quantities the tonic, aperient effect predominates and it is therefore useful in cases of appetite loss and acute diarrhea. Used to treat constipation, dysentery, hemorrhoids, portal congestion, pin/thread worms, skin eruptions from faulty elimination, blood in the stool and duodenal ulcers. It has a truly cleansing action upon the gut, removing debris, and then astringing with antiseptic properties as well. It is used externally to promote healing, counteract blood clots and promote menstruation. Stronger doses are laxative after 8-10 hours and are used to treat chronic constipation. Rhubarb is included in some proprietary preparations and is also a component of herbal tea mixtures and digestive powders. In 1987 a research team investigated extracts of 178 Chinese herbs for antibacterial activity against one of the major microorganisms in human intestinal flora. Only Rhubarb was found to have significant activity. The herb can be applied to burns, boils, and carbuncles. It is a useful mouthwash for canker sores.

Cnidium: Cnidium (Ligusticum)  (Chuan Xiong) (Chinese Lovage) is one of the primary blood-vitalizing herbs used in Chinese herbalism. Blood-vitalizing herbs improve circulation. Cnidium has very positive effects on the heart and liver functions. It is also very widely used in treating menstrual disorders because it is so effective at promoting blood flow and relieving pain associated with blood and energy stagnation. It is also a good blood tonic. It has recently been recognized as being beneficial to the heart muscle and circulatory system. It significantly improves myocardial circulation and is being used clinically in China to treat and prevent heart disease. Cnidium  is also widely used to relieve the pain associated with rhematism and arthritis and in formulas that are used for colds, flu, sinus congestion and various skin disorders.

Ginseng root: Ginseng is an adaptogen and a powerful anti-stress agent. Ginseng helps to balance the whole mind/body system at a fundamental level. This concept refers to the ability of Ginseng to assist in regulating or strengthening the body's functions that regulate other body functions. Ginseng increases mental and physical efficiency and has been proven to be beneficial for general mental and physical weakness. It is usually used with other herbs, but sometimes by itself. It is not a stimulant, but promotes concentration and alertness. It has also been shown to improve memory and reasoning ability. Ginseng is an excellent herb for aged people. It sometimes produces startling results in reversing intellectual and mental deterioration. It is also helpful in quickening recovery from illness or surgery. Even after one stops taking Ginseng the mental and physical changes last for a long time.

Licorice root: Licorice root has more detoxifying agents that any other substance in the world. It has the ability to rid the body of more than 600 toxins without any detrimental side effects. It also helps regulate blood sugar levels, nourish the adrenal glands, and even to build muscle. It is a harmonizing herb, helping the diverse ingredients in various herbal formulas. It increases vital energy and is used to strengthen digestive and metabolic functions. It also aids the assimilation of nutrients.

Licorice root, in the amounts of 1-5%, is added to many herbal formulas to enhance and harmonize the actions of all the other herbs in the formula. It is amazing that such a small amount can bring such profound results. This is the great strength of Traditional Chinese Medicine that the sum of all the whole herbal formula is worth more than the isolated parts.
